| FCC Announces Media Consolidation Hearings The FCC announces the intention of having public hearings to involve the public as part of the review of current broadcast ownership rules. New FCC rules within the last decade have proliferated the current trend in media ownership consolidation, allowing less companies to control the media. This has affected the quality of media, decreased local content, eliminated diversity of content and ideas, and consolidated jobs. Common Frequency was in Los Angeles for two hearings that kicked off the FCC's national series. The hearings, one at USC and one at El Segundo High School, were slightly disorganized. Scheduling details of each event were provided less than a week before the event by the FCC. All five FCC Commissioners attended, along with a panel of speakers. FCC recently, within a few days, released another hearing date in Oakland: WHEN: Friday October 27, starting at 5 pm WHERE: Oakland Marriott City Center, 1001 Broadway at 10th St (BART Oakland 12th St) Visited the Media Alliance website for more information. It appears only Commissioners Copps and Adelstein--the Democratic-affiliated Commissioners--will be present at this one. Further meeting dates will be posted here per release by FCC. |
